Luther Movie Teaser Reveals Netflix & Theatrical Release Dates

A new trailer for Luther: The Fallen Sun has revealed both the streaming and theatrical premiere dates, ending years of anticipation.
Starring as the title character, Elba led the cast of the BBC crime thriller series as he struggled with his obsessive behavior for solving the crimes presented to him, including his complicated relationship with murderer Alice Morgan, from whom he gained insight into the mind of a psychopath and tracked down multiple criminals.
Elba received a Golden Globe and four Emmy nods for his role as Luther during the course of the show's run, and his performance was so well received that many fans have been eagerly awaiting the long-awaited film continuation since the show's fifth season began four years ago.

Idris Elba has taken to Twitter to unveil a brand new trailer for Luther: The Fallen Sun, with just a few months left till the film is available to stream.

Although it doesn't feature any actual film material, a new trailer has announced that the Elba-led drama will debut in cinemas on February 24 and on Netflix the following month on March 10.
A March debut on Netflix was all that had been announced about Luther: The Fallen Sun.

Luther: The Fallen Sun was planned for a streaming release, so it will be intriguing to see why Netflix wants to put it to theaters first.
The streaming service typically reserves theatrical releases for its high-profile projects or those they are trying to promote to awards season voters, such as Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, which won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which received two Golden Globe nominations, and Noah Baumbach's White Noise, which received one Golden Globe nomination for Adam Driver's lead performance.
However, Rian Johnson's whodunnit sequel has been the main topic of conversation regarding Netflix's theatrical distribution strategy, with many reviewers and moviegoers expressing dismay that the picture was only allowed a one-week release despite the original film grossing over $311 million at the box office.

Johnson has said he'd want to try to have a bigger theatrical release for Knives Out 3, and Netflix may be trying that theory out with Luther: The Fallen Sun.
In light of the fact that Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery apparently earned Netflix its greatest box office haul to date, the streaming service may be optimistic that the excitement around Elba's return will help the picture earn more money than Johnson's much anticipated follow-up.
At this moment, however, it is unknown if Luther: The Fallen Sun will have a wider or longer theatrical distribution than Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
